Studio Black

Approach

One process, from first question to shipped product.

Design and build run as a single process under one accountable lead. Specs come before code, verification before release, and privacy is designed in from the first sketch. It’s how the studio moves quickly without shipping carelessly.

The process

  1. 01 1–2 weeks

    Frame

Interviews, workflow analysis, constraints, success metrics. We learn how the work actually happens before we touch it.

    You get:

a written brief everyone agrees with, and a decision on whether to proceed.

  2. 02 2–4 weeks

    Shape

Product definition, information architecture, key flows, MVP scope, a prototype in users’ hands, and a decision on which platforms the product lives on, and in what order.

    You get:

what to build, what to leave out, and a plan with timelines.

  3. 03

    Design

Interface, interaction and a design system (tokens, components, documentation), validated with users as it forms, and built to hold across every platform in scope.

    You get:

a system your team can extend, not a folder of screens.

  4. 04

    Build

Spec-driven engineering. Every feature starts as a written specification and implementation plan; code is reviewed against it and verified before it merges. Privacy engineering throughout.

    You get:

production software, tested, documented and owned by you.

  5. 05

    Ship & run

Launch, monitoring, measurement, iteration. Stay on as a product partnership, or hand over cleanly with documentation.

    You get:

a product in the market and the means to keep improving it.

How we hold the line.

  1. Constraints first. Safety, regulation, latency and trust are inputs, not review comments.

  2. Specs before code. Written specifications and plans, review against them, a Definition of Done before anything merges.

  3. Privacy by design. GDPR and the EU AI Act considered up front; encryption, data minimisation and audit trails built in, not retrofitted.

  4. Systems, not screens. Design systems, documentation and tokens, built to hold across platforms, so the product can grow without us.

  5. AI as an instrument. We use AI-assisted engineering under the same gates as everything else. It’s why a senior team ships at the pace of a much larger one, and why “AI-generated” never has to mean careless.

  6. You own everything. Code, designs, databases and accounts are yours from day one; rights transfer in full on completion.

How an engagement runs

  1. One accountable lead. A principal from first call to release; no account managers.

  2. Weekly reviews. Working software or working design, every week; decisions written down.

  3. A shared board. Scope, priorities and progress visible at all times.

  4. Direct access. You talk to the people doing the work.

  5. Clean exits. Documentation, hand-over and knowledge transfer are part of every scope.
